Love Me Again

She notices him across the dance floor before she is ready to see him again. The familiar face arrives a second before the memories do. Neither waves. For a moment, the moving crowd gives them somewhere to hide.

They meet at the edge of the terrace, where the music is softer but the bass still travels through the floor. He almost begins with the old easy confidence. Then he sees her expression and stops. She remembers how well they once knew each other, and how quickly that familiarity became an excuse not to listen. Missing someone has not made those memories disappear.

She gives him room to speak without rescuing him from the silence. This time there is no grand explanation and no claim that everything can be repaired tonight. He admits that wanting her back is easier than earning her trust. She does not soften immediately. But she stays long enough to hear a sentence that has not been polished into a promise.

When the music rises again, he offers his hand. She looks at it, then at him. Taking it will not erase the goodbye or settle what happens in the morning. It will mean one dance, with both of them awake to what has already happened. She steps closer. The song leaves them there: not restored to who they were, but willing to discover whether there is someone new to meet beneath the familiar face.
