Lie to Me
A fictional scene inspired by the song.He comes back after midnight with a voice she remembers better than the things he says. She lets him in. The conversation begins almost where the last one ended, as if the days between them can be folded neatly out of sight.
His coat stays beside him rather than joining hers on the hook. She notices. He asks about her day but carefully avoids tomorrow. She notices that too. There are questions she could ask that would change the temperature of the room in a second. Instead, she watches him search for a gentle way to explain an absence he has explained before.
When the reassurance finally comes, it is familiar enough to hurt. She does not mistake it for proof. That is the uneasy centre of “Lie to Me”: knowing a promise will not hold and still wanting, for one night, to hear how it sounds. He can see that she knows. The silence after his words makes them both responsible for the small shelter they are building.
They stay until the first light reaches the window. Nothing dramatic breaks the spell; he simply reaches for the coat that was never put away. This time she does not offer another sentence to keep him there. After the door closes, she opens the curtain herself. The lie has not rescued them, and the morning has not made her careless. It has only made the difference between comfort and trust harder to ignore.
